Czechia versus South Africa
- Kick-off:
- Stadium: Mercedes-Benz Stadium · Atlanta, United States
Czechia
Czechia return after missing the 2022 edition, restoring continuity to a footballing tradition that produced Czechoslovak finalists in 1934 and 1962, and a Euro champion in 1976. Ivan Hašek, hired after the Euro 2024 group-stage exit, has prioritised pragmatism over flair. Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen) provides the goal threat — when fit, his record ratio for the national team rivals any striker in Europe. Tomáš Souček remains the West Ham midfield engine. Group A draws Czechia alongside co-host Mexico, South Korea and South Africa — three opponents that vary wildly in style. The squad's ceiling is realistic Round-of-32 progression; anything beyond would be a shock.
South Africa
South Africa return to football's biggest stage for the first time since hosting in 2010, ending a 16-year drought. Hugo Broos, the Belgian who delivered Cameroon's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations title, has built a disciplined Bafana Bafana side around goalkeeper Ronwen Williams — heroic in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations bronze run. Up front, Lyle Foster (Burnley) and Percy Tau provide pace; Themba Zwane orchestrates from midfield. Group A throws South Africa against Mexico, South Korea and Czechia — three opponents who all rank higher historically. Survival of the group stage is the realistic ambition; a knockout-round match would already be a generational achievement.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosts eight matches in 2026, including a round-of-16 fixture, anchoring the tournament in the American South. Located in downtown Atlanta, the venue opened in 2017 with a distinctive retractable roof that opens and closes in eight pie-shaped petals — a design unique among modern stadiums. Capacity for football is approximately 71,000. Home to the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta United MLS franchise, it brings genuine football operations expertise to the tournament. The retractable roof is decisive in Atlanta's humid summers, where afternoon heat indices can exceed 40°C. The stadium has been retrofitted from artificial turf to natural grass for the tournament. Atlanta's status as a major Black metropolis and the Southeast's commercial centre makes it a strategic choice — and the city has actively cultivated football culture for nearly a decade.
