South Africa
Sixteen years is a long time to wait. South Africa last appeared at the tournament in 2010, when they hosted it and went out in the group stage, the only host nation ever to do so. This is their first qualified return on merit since, and the man steering it is Hugo Broos, the Belgian who lifted the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon and has since drilled Bafana Bafana into a disciplined, defensively organised unit. Confidence comes from a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, a run in which captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was decisive. The plan reads simply enough: stay compact, lean on Williams, and break quickly through the pace of Lyle Foster and Percy Tau. In Group A, with Mexico, South Korea and Czechia, surviving the group would already feel like a homecoming repaid.
