Ghana
Sixteen years on, the ache has not faded. When Asamoah Gyan struck the bar in the final seconds against Uruguay in 2010, Ghana, and an entire continent, were left a missed penalty short of a first World Cup semi-final. The Black Stars return in 2026 with that wound still open and a markedly younger squad to carry it. Otto Addo, kept on after guiding the team through qualifying, has built around Mohammed Kudus, whose creativity at Tottenham makes him the side's focal point, with Antoine Semenyo and Iñaki Williams stretching defences with their pace. Thomas Partey, when fit, holds things together in midfield. A first appearance since 2022 places them in Group L behind England, alongside Croatia and Panama. Reaching the last 16 would feel like a small instalment on a long-overdue debt.
