Croatia versus Ghana

Croatia

Croatia arrive at their seventh tournament — 2018 finalists, 2022 third-placed — with the Luka Modrić era at its absolute twilight. The Real Madrid legend, now 41, plays one final tournament; Mateo Kovačić (Manchester City), Marcelo Brozović (Al-Nassr), Andrej Kramarić (Hoffenheim) and Joško Gvardiol (Manchester City) form the core. Zlatko Dalić, who has overseen all three of Croatia's deep tournament runs, remains in charge. The Vatreni's recipe is unchanged: technical midfield dominance, defensive solidity, big-game mentality. Group L with England, Ghana and Panama is winnable for second; the round of 16 is the floor, the quarter-final realistic, and a third consecutive deep run not impossible. This is Modrić's farewell — and Croatia know how to honour their best.

Ghana

Ghana return for their fifth tournament — first since 2022 — with the Black Stars seeking redemption after that bitter Uruguay group-stage defeat. Otto Addo, retained after qualification, leads a squad rebuilt around the next generation. Mohammed Kudus (Tottenham) is the chief creator and unquestioned star; Antoine Semenyo (Bournemouth) and Iñaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao) provide pace and finishing; Thomas Partey, when fit, anchors midfield; Jordan Ayew supplies veteran experience. Ghana reached the quarter-final in 2010 — closest any African nation has come to a semi-final — and the country still mourns the missed Asamoah Gyan penalty. Group L with England, Croatia and Panama is brutal but Ghana have the squad to chase second place. A round-of-16 berth would represent meaningful return to relevance.

Lincoln Financial Field

Lincoln Financial Field hosts six matches in 2026, including round-of-32 and round-of-16 fixtures. Located in South Philadelphia, the venue opened in 2003 and is shared by the Philadelphia Eagles NFL franchise and the Philadelphia Union MLS side. Capacity for football is approximately 69,200. The pitch is natural grass, requiring no conversion. Climate: Mid-Atlantic summer brings warm-to-hot conditions (28-32°C) with moderate humidity and a meaningful thunderstorm-risk window. Philadelphia is open-air with no climate control. The city's footballing heritage runs deep — Philadelphia Union have been an MLS foundation member, and the metropolitan area's ethnic mix (Italian, Irish, African, Caribbean, Latin American communities) gives Lincoln Financial Field a multicultural supporter base that mirrors many of the visiting nations during the group stage.
