Ecuador
There is something quietly subversive about this Ecuador side. South American football trades on flair, yet Sebastián Beccacece, the Argentine appointed in 2024, has built his team the other way round: on a deep-lying spine and a defence that gives almost nothing away. The proof came in qualifying, where Ecuador conceded the second-fewest goals in CONMEBOL and booked their place with room to spare. At its heart sits Moisés Caicedo of Chelsea, one of the most expensive midfielders the game has seen, shielding a back line marshalled by Piero Hincapié. The intrigue, though, is teenager Kendry Páez, the Chelsea-bound playmaker who may yet redefine the next decade. In Group E, alongside Germany, Curaçao and Côte d'Ivoire, second place and a return to the round of 16 is a fair target for this fifth appearance.
