Uruguay

Uruguay arrive at their 14th tournament — two-time champions (1930, 1950) — with a thrilling new generation. Marcelo Bielsa, who took over in 2023, has injected his trademark high press into a squad fronted by Federico Valverde (Real Madrid), Darwin Núñez (Liverpool) and Maxi Araújo (Sporting CP). Manuel Ugarte (Manchester United) anchors midfield; José Giménez and Ronald Araújo lead the back. La Celeste reached the 2024 Copa América semi-final and look hungrier than at any point since 2010's fourth-place finish. Group H with Spain, Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde is winnable for second; with Bielsa's ceiling, anything from the round of 16 to the semi-final is plausible. The talent matches the ambition.

Spain

Spain arrive as reigning European champions and arguably the most complete team in the tournament. Luis de la Fuente, who turned the Euro 2024 triumph into a structural reset rather than a one-off, runs a 4-3-3 anchored by Rodri (Manchester City) — assuming his ACL recovery holds — with Pedri (Barcelona) and Fabián Ruiz (PSG) supplying tempo. Lamine Yamal, still only 18, is the wing prodigy of his generation; Nico Williams (Athletic) attacks the opposite flank; Álvaro Morata leads the line. La Roja have won three of the last four major tournaments they entered when fully fit. Group H with Saudi Arabia, Uruguay and Cape Verde is comfortable on paper; reaching at least the semi-final is the floor for a side this stacked.

Estadio Akron

Estadio Akron hosts four group-stage matches in 2026 — its first major-tournament hosting role. Located in Zapopan, in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, the venue opened in 2010 as the home of CD Guadalajara (Chivas), one of Mexican football's most storied clubs. Capacity is approximately 49,800 — the smallest in the tournament. The pitch is natural grass. Climate: Guadalajara sits at 1,560 metres altitude with mild summer temperatures (22-28°C) and noticeable evening cooling — a more temperate environment than Monterrey or Mexico City. Daily afternoon thunderstorm risk is real during the rainy season. Guadalajara is the heart of mariachi, tequila, and traditional Mexican identity, giving Akron the most culturally distinctive setting of the three Mexican host venues.
