Cape Verde
Half a million people live across the islands of Cape Verde, which makes the Blue Sharks one of the smallest nations ever to reach this stage. The miracle is simply that they are here. Bubista, a coach trained in Portugal and in charge since 2020, built the qualifying run on a stubborn defensive shape and a squad drawn almost entirely from the Cape Verdean diaspora. Stopira anchors the back line in front of goalkeeper Vozinha, while Ryan Mendes brings the experience up top and Garry Rodrigues the spark from the wing. Their quarter-final run at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations proved this is no fluke. In Group H, alongside Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, a single point would feel like a trophy, and a competitive afternoon against the bigger names would already be history made.
