Portugal

Portugal arrive at their ninth tournament — fifth consecutive — with the Cristiano Ronaldo era closing on a high. Roberto Martínez, the Spanish coach who took over after Qatar 2022, has rebuilt around Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) as the chief creator and Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) as the connector, with Rafael Leão (Milan), Pedro Neto (Chelsea) and João Félix (Chelsea) supplying width. Ronaldo, now 41, remains the figurehead but no longer the mathematical engine. Defensively Rúben Dias (Manchester City) and Pepe lead the back, with Diogo Costa in goal. Portugal's 2024 European quarter-final exit on penalties to France was painful but the squad is deeper than ever. Group K with DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia is winnable for first; the semi-final is the realistic target — anything less is the same old underachievement.

DR Congo

DR Congo return after a 52-year absence, having last appeared in 1974 as Zaire under Mobutu. Sébastien Desabre, the French coach who took over in 2022, has built around the European-based core: Cédric Bakambu (Real Betis) leads the line, Yoane Wissa (Newcastle) and Silas Katompa (Stuttgart) provide pace, Chancel Mbemba (anchor of the back), and goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. The Leopards reached the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final, signalling that this generation is no longer just a footnote. Group K with Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia is challenging — second place would require beating either Uzbekistan and at minimum drawing with Colombia. The country has waited two generations for this moment; advancing past the group stage for the first time in their history is the legacy-defining target.

NRG Stadium

NRG Stadium hosts seven matches in 2026, including round-of-32 and round-of-16 fixtures. Located in Houston, Texas, near the world-famous Houston Texans NFL franchise, the venue opened in 2002 as the first NFL stadium with a retractable roof. Capacity is approximately 72,000 for football. The retractable roof is essential for Houston's notoriously oppressive summers — heat indices can hit 45°C with humidity that makes outdoor afternoon football logistically untenable. The pitch was reconverted from artificial turf to natural grass for the tournament. Houston is the most diverse major city in the United States by some demographic measures and has a deep Latin American population, particularly Mexican, making the venue a strategic supporter base for CONMEBOL nations and Mexico's Group A campaign as co-hosts.
