Argentina versus Austria
- Kick-off:
- Stadium: AT&T Stadium · Dallas, United States
Argentina
Argentina arrive as defending champions and 2024 Copa América winners — the only side in modern football to defend a continental title alongside their global crown. Lionel Scaloni, the architect of the Qatar 2022 triumph, has barely tinkered. Lionel Messi, now in his late thirties at Inter Miami, is the talisman as long as his body holds; Lautaro Martínez (Inter), Julián Álvarez (Atlético Madrid) and Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool) form the post-Messi core; Enzo Fernández (Chelsea) and Rodrigo De Paul (Atlético) supply midfield steel. La Albiceleste lift trophies because they have systems, not just stars. Group J with Algeria, Austria and Jordan is comfortable; the floor is the quarter-final, the realistic ceiling is back-to-back titles.
Austria
Austria return for their first tournament since 1998 — a 28-year wait, ended by a vibrant Ralf Rangnick generation. The German coach, who took over in 2022 and rejected multiple major club offers to stay, has installed his classic high-pressing 4-2-2-2. Marcel Sabitzer (Borussia Dortmund), Konrad Laimer (Bayern), Christoph Baumgartner (RB Leipzig) and Marko Arnautović form the spine; David Alaba (Real Madrid) returns from injury to lead the back if fit. The Euro 2024 round-of-16 exit to Türkiye stung but the performances were elite. Group J with Argentina, Algeria and Jordan is winnable for second; Austria's Rangnick-era pressing identity gives them genuine upset potential. The quarter-final — never reached in their history — is the dream.
AT&T Stadium
AT&T Stadium hosts nine matches in 2026, including a semi-final — the most of any host venue. Located in Arlington, Texas, between Dallas and Fort Worth, the venue opened in 2009 and seats 80,000 for football, expandable to over 100,000. Its retractable roof is the largest of its kind in the world and is decisive for North Texas summers, where afternoon temperatures regularly exceed 38°C (100°F). The roof is closed during midday matches and can be opened for evening kickoffs. The pitch has been converted to natural grass for the tournament from its standard artificial-turf NFL configuration. Home to the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium combines vast spectator capacity with climate control — likely the most operationally-flexible venue in the entire tournament.
