Netherlands
The most decorated team never to win the World Cup carries that label like an old wound. Three finals, in 1974, 1978 and 2010, all lost; five decades as the eternal bridesmaid. Ronald Koeman, back for a second spell, has steadied things on the back of the run to the Euro 2024 semi-finals, where the Dutch rediscovered a little belief. His side is built on a familiar logic: Virgil van Dijk anchoring the defence and wearing the armband, Frenkie de Jong setting the tempo from deep when fit, Cody Gakpo and Xavi Simons stretching the play out wide. It is a technically refined, balanced team that knows what it wants to be. In Group F, against Japan, Sweden and Tunisia, the path looks manageable, and a semi-final is the honest target. Less than that would feel like a chance missed.
